Located in eastern York County, Fort Mill is the home of Springs Industries, one of the nation's largest Textile manufacturing companies, along with other Fortune 500 companies.
A thriving community with a population of approximately 8,000 people inside the corporate limits, the small town ambiance has been preserved through the spirit of friendliness and hospitality. Fort Mill Township's population in 2000 was nearly 30,000 people and growing. Yet, as part of the Charlotte, Gastonia, Rock Hill Metropolitan Area, we have more than 1,400,000 inhabitants within a 35-mile radius of Fort Mill.
Among its assets are numerous historical churches, an excellent and rapidly growing school system, the largest branch of the York County Library, the Leroy Springs Recreation Complex, the Anne Springs Close Greenway, a YMCA, multiple golf courses, Lake Wylie, numerous civic groups, three fire departments, and a well-equipped and staffed rescue squad. Fort Mill has a wealth of historic and interesting places to visit. The last meeting of the full Confederate Cabinet was held at the White Homestead in Fort Mill.

The town is governed by a mayor and six council members and has adopted the Council/Manager form of government. Sixty-five full time employees currently provide a variety of services for the town residents, including police, fire, building inspections, garbage and water and sewer services. The total budget for the town for fiscal year 2001 is $6,076,439.
